Stern Flap Application on Planing Hulls to Improve Resistance

Drag is one of the main factors in improving fuel efficiency. Various study regards to improve drag performance a planing hull amongst them stern flap. The parameters design flap are span length and angle works by changing pressure distribution over ship's bottom creating lift force on transom part. This aims analyze behavior variations towards Fridsma form. Finite Volume Method (FVM) Reynolds-Averaged Navier - Stokes (RANS) used predict resistance during simulations. Results show that shear very sensitive total value, proving valued at least 60% each multi-phase characteristics phase. Stern with 58% breadth installed 0° considered most optimal, reducing 10.2% drag, followed 18% displacement reduction. In conclusion, effectively improves hull’s its components 0.89 < Fr 1.89.
